Pancreatitis is an inflammation of the pancreas. The pancreas produces insulin. This inflammation
results in an obstruction caused by the presence of gallstones or scarring. This is often alcohol
related damage, and is the leading underlying cause in men. In women, it is most often linked to bile
tract disease. Pancreatitis can also be caused by a virus, an abdominal injury, obesity, poor nutrition
or use of certain drugs. Repeated episodes of gallbladder infection and gallstones can be involved.
Because the pancreas is the gland that produces insulin, pancreatitis often leads to glucose intolerance
and digestive difficulties. Pancreatitis has specific radiating abdominal pain with other specific
symptoms that I will not describe here. This is an extremely serious condition that requires medical attention.
